Nick trained to be a Luthier at the London Guildhall University, and subsequently ran his own workshop in Bishops Stortford, Herts. Initially making early guitars, he eventually branched out into repairing many stringed instruments for local musicians. For several years he worked full time for his old University, now renamed The London Metropolitan University, running and teaching on the degree programme in Musical Instrument Making.

Three years ago he set up his own business Fretboard Works. The workshop is based in Hertford, where he teaches guitar making, and also continues to repair instruments for local players and guitar shops. He still teaches at the University, but as a part time Senior Lecturer.
