Thomas Lie-Nielsen is that man behind LIE-NIELSEN TOOLWORKS which began life in 1981. Thomas’s mission was to make top-quality hand tools available again from a U.S. maker and to revive discontinued, but useful, designs so the average woodworker could obtain them.

Today Lie Nielsen Toolworks make over 100 types of planes, saws, spokeshaves, chisels, floats and more. They have a wonderful reputation for their hand tool range whose first priority is quality. Thomas drives the business but sticks to his long held beliefs by staying local to Maine USA as he resists the temptation to out-sourcing jobs for the cheapest price and short-term profit. He stays refreshingly local by sourcing his metal castings from New England foundries, wood from Maine sawyers and uses the combination of modern CNC technology, Bridgeport milling machines and good old-fashioned hand work.

Thomas’s mission is to design and create beautiful, heirloom quality, hand tools that inspire woodworkers and other artisans.

Through exceptional support and education, Lie Nielsen Toolworks customers receive the same personal attention Thomas has invested into his tools.
